When it comes to early detection and disease prevention, men’s health often falls behind. Many men ignore symptoms or delay visits to their GP, which may sometimes affect opportunities for early detection and timely management of health concerns.

Why men’s health checks matter

Several leading causes of illness and death among men, including cardiovascular disease, undiagnosed diabetes, lung cancer, and prostate cancer, may be linked to preventable or manageable risk factors. Routine health check-ups with a GP, together with positive lifestyle changes such as maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and reducing smoking or alcohol intake, may help lower some of these risks.

At Altona North Medical Hub, you can book a confidential consultation with a GP to discuss your general health, specific symptoms, or preventive health concerns.

This service may be suitable for individuals seeking men’s health support in Altona and surrounding areas of Melbourne.

Men's Health Check

When should men get a health check?

The timing of health assessments may vary depending on age, medical history,
family history, and individual risk factors.

If you are looking for a men’s health clinic in Altona or surrounding Melbourne
areas, GPs may generally consider the following:

  • From 18 years
A general health review and discussion around lifestyle, mental wellbeing,
and preventive health may be appropriate.
  • From around 40 years
A GP may consider assessing cardiovascular risk factors and other chronic disease risks.
  • From 45 years and over
Discussion regarding screening for conditions such as diabetes, bowel cancer, and cardiovascular disease may be considered depending on individual risk factors.
  • Government-funded health assessments for people aged 45–49 years
Eligible patients who may be at risk of developing a chronic disease may be able to access a government-funded health assessment aimed at identifying risk factors early and supporting preventive health strategies. Your GP can
discuss whether you may be eligible.
  • At any age
A review may be appropriate if there are new symptoms, changes in health, or general health concerns.
  • Individuals with risk factors such as family history of chronic disease, smoking, higher alcohol intake, psychological stress, or low physical activity may benefit from more regular reviews.

What to expect from a men’s health consultation

A men’s health consultation is guided by your individual needs and clinical assessment.

    Your GP may discuss:

    • Medical history and family history
    • Lifestyle factors including diet, exercise, smoking, and alcohol use
    • Current symptoms or health concerns
    • Whether any investigations, tests, or screening may be appropriate based on your age and risk factors

These consultations provide an opportunity for an open and confidential discussion about your health.
They may also help identify potential health risks and guide decisions regarding prevention,
management, or further care where appropriate.

    Heart health checks

Blood pressure, cholesterol, and other cardiovascular risk factors may be assessed depending on your age, symptoms, and clinical risk profile.

    Diabetes screening

For men over 45, or those with risk factors such as family history or excess weight, blood glucose testing and lifestyle advice may assist with early detection and management.

    Sexual health

STI screening and sexual health discussions may help support informed health decisions and overall wellbeing.

    Additional areas of support

Men’s health consultations may also include discussion around:

    • Smoking cessation
    • Alcohol or drug-related concerns
    • Immunisations
    • Injury management
    • General wellbeing

Where appropriate, your GP may discuss further investigations or referral options if specialist input is required.

    Book a consultation

If you would like to discuss your health concerns, you may consider booking a consultation with one of our GPs at Altona North Medical Hub.

Appointments can be booked online or by phoning our reception team, who will be happy to assist you.

This provides an opportunity to discuss your personal health needs and consider appropriate care options based on clinical assessment.

Worst customer service ever experienced I can’t believe how rude this receptionist lady was on the phone absolutely 0 respect she should get fired!! For managers referral this phone call was on 21/01/2025. She was being aggressive on the phone when I asked her if I can come in and then she hung up in my face. I then kept trying to call back to book an appointment as this is my local clinic and I was never answered too.

My family and I have been regulars at Altona Medical Clinic for over 20 years. Generally the service is good, but over the last 12 months trying to get an appointment is woeful. Not only must you ring at 8am for an urgent appointment, you are slotted against changing Drs. I tried today at 8am to be told no appointment for 2 days. Sadly that is pushing us out the door to alternative options. Don’t even bother if your a new patient!

Terrible experience on 20/11 with the female admin staff at kidney west. She’s rude, unhelpful, and completely disorganized. Patients deserve better care and respect, especially in a medical setting.

The admin was rude toward the person who was on the phone to have an inquiry. The admin turned around and said the person who was on the phone was having attitude. Could the admin be more patient and listen to inquire before her negative conclusion.

I haven't been a patient since August 2023 & receive a random missed call, no message left. When I contact them they said i'd seen a doctor the day earlier, was this about payment? No, I wasn't there yesterday & why has someone accessed my patient details to call me? Reception had zero idea as to why I'd been called as there were no notes on my file. I now have serious concerns about my confidential information lodged with them. After 2 hours of awaiting a reply regarding this I have decided to post this review. Beware, as they seem to be unable to explain how or why my information was used & the person on reception seemed to not even care that this was of concern.

19 years I’ve been coming to this practice with our whole family but today is my last appointment ever. On my last visit the doctor was so lacking in interest in me and the reason I was there. Today I’ve sat for 1.5 hours in the car waiting to see doctor outside because I had a fever. After an hour I phoned to be told told I’m next and doctor running an hour behind. Multiple phone calls over next 30 mins and I am repeatedly told I’m next. I’m so sick I just want to go home and crawl into bed. This is cruel and unusual punishment. I’m giving up and going home. To prove how money hungry they are - after 1 hour 40 mins waiting in car - when I phone to say I was cancelling and going to another clinic THEN the doctor can phone me within 2 mins. Review your practices. You’re a disgrace of a clinic. You won’t ever see me again
